Legend has it that High John the Conqueror was once captured and sold into slavery, but he never let his spirit be enslaved. Despite the harsh conditions and cruelty he faced, he was always cheerful, spreading hope and laughter among his fellow slaves.
High John had a magic root that gave him incredible strength and the ability to outsmart his oppressors. One story goes that a cruel overseer wanted to break John’s spirit, but John challenged him to a race, knowing that the overseer couldn’t resist the chance to humiliate him. John used his magic root to make himself light as a feather, running effortlessly and leaving the overseer in the dust.
When the overseer tried to whip John for his defiance, John simply laughed, saying that no whip could touch his free spirit. The other slaves were inspired by John’s courage and wit, and they began to find their own ways to resist and survive.
